March 2012 Books

The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman is the Manitowish Waters choice for March. It tells story of the slow decline of a English-language newspaper based in Rome. As with Olive Kitteridge and Driftless, each chapter covers a different character some of which again show up in later chapters. It's filled with good people, odd people, naive people and some people who are just plain jerks.

You Know When the Men Are Gone follows the lives of a number of military wives who must continue their lives at Ft. Hood and raise their families as their spouses are stationed overseas. The New York Times does a much better job of describing the book than I can.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is the Winchester book for March and the April book for Manitowish Waters. The New York Times Sunday review probably does a better job of explaining Henrietta life and her importance to medical science.

Thought I'd try to find some of the early articles mentioned in the book. The University of Maryland has set up a link that lists a number of magazine articles about Henrietta, her family and the HeLa cells. There is a charge for the Rolling Stone article but the rest are free.
