Here's a question from the Reading Group Guides that puts the pros and cons of nu shu right here in 2007;
11. Because of its phonetic nature, nu shu could easily be taken out of context and be misunderstood. Today, many of us communicate though e-mail or instant-messaging. Have you ever had an experience where one of your messages has been misunderstood because of lack of context, facial or body gestures, and tone of voice? Or have you ever been on the receiving end of a message that you misinterpreted and your feelings were hurt?

Personally, I recall an e-mail where I was giving information, educating someone all in the spirit of kindness. But my e-mail must not have sounded kind or helpful to this person. It took several e-mails to get on the same page with her, finally my tone came through and my resentment to her anger were resolved. I feel I helped her and she was happy to be helped. It was very frustrating. And this was with someone I didnot personally know. I can only imagine the pain if it were with as close a friend as Snow Flower. Vic...
A book available in MW was mentioned during our discussion of Amish teens but I missed the title.
I did find an article on rumspringa on the NPR website. The DVD of the program is available through Merlin. The book, Rumspringa: To Be or Not To Be Amish by Tom Shachtman, is also available.
Maybe the book you remember us mentioning is Plain Truth, by Jodi Picoult. An Amish girl is on trial for giving birth, and then smothering the baby, so you see the character both in and outside the Amish community. It reads pretty quickly, I think. Carm
